The new year is here and with that means a new slate of movies and shows to consume. It's time to get hype for new movies, new seasons, spinoffs and sequels. After extensive research, I have compiled a list of the top 20 nerdy 2024 cinematic and streaming releases.

Echo

I have to admit that this show is probably ranked so high because of the recently released trailers. Echo seemingly promises a return to the grounded and gritty portrayal of Marvel superheroes that we are accustomed to with the Netflix series (e.g. Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica Jones). Although I have not yet started it, this series just dropped on January 9th. I will be starting it soon and suggest you do as well.

Joker: Folie a Deux

Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as Joker in a follow-up to the 2019 movie Joker. This sequel will also feature the fan-favorite Harley Quinn, played by the one and only Lady Gaga. The first movie was critically acclaimed and took a different approach to the superhero movie genre. The bar is set high for this movie, but I'm excited to see the outcome.

3rd Place

Star Wars: Acolyte

There is little information out about this Star Wars series. We do know that it will be set during the High Republic Era, which is a distant past to the Star Wars timeline that we are accustomed to. The name implies that the story will be told from the perspective of a dark side apprentice. I'm a sucker for Star Wars and am excited to visit a new era, from a new perspective, in that universe.

Deadpool 3

Ryan Reynolds is coming back as Deadpool, and the rumors for this movie are wild! The first two Deadpool movies were great, and I’m beyond excited to see how this third installment plays out. We know for certain this movie will include the long-awaited return of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, but several more “FOX Marvel” characters are also rumored to make appearances. This movie is slated to be Marvel’s only cinematic release for 2024, so I am certain this will be a huge summer hit!

X-Men '97

If reading the title X-Men '97 doesn’t bring an iconic electric guitar riff to the forefront of your brain, then I could understand why you would be confused about this being my number-1 pick for 2024 releases. I adore the 90s “X-Men” animated series; it was my initiation into nerdom. Many of the voice actors will be reprising their roles, and the new series is set to pick up right where the original series left off. This show is the definition of my childhood nostalgia, and I’m so excited to finally find out the release date.
